"The swim start was like something I have never experienced before. Literally 1800 sardines in a can. Bodies every where, and a right struggle to get a proper stroke in for the first 1-2 minutes. Since I had let myself push towards the back a bit during the last 10 minutes before the start I had some ground to make up, but swimming from gap to gap in this massive field I seemed to manage to fight my way through towards the front and ended up coming out of the water in just under an hour! Biggest swim exit ever with masses of people lining the seawall, what a start of the day, fantastic.
Out on the bike and through the first little out and back loop around Kona before heading out onto the Queen K. Head down on the aerobars and go!! 70km later around the corner for another 30km straight towards the turnaround in Hawi where the last 10km got pretty tricky w some very strong head and side winds on a long mean uphill drag. I forced myself not to push too hard and keep my heart rate within range, which meant I was passed by some people that were clearly pushing hard up this hill. Got my personal feed bag near Hawi w two more bottles of Go Electrolyte (pimped up w an extra serving of SuperHydro for the much needed salts in this weather).Combined w some water from the aid stations along the way, the 10 gels, a mini Go bar and the 3 bottles of Go/Superhydro, I knew this would get me through the bike and ready for the run. After the turnaround it was tricky coming down w the same strong sidewinds and high speeds. My height (1.94m) and weight (78 kilo) managed to keep the bike on the road however and power my way back down towards the Queen K again. I caught up a lot of people on this stretch who were clearly struggling w the wind more then I was. Another long, long endless stretch along the Queen K into transition and after a bike split of 4hr55min I could start my run. The first 8-9 miles along Alii drive and back went well and I managed a pace of just over 7min/mile fairly comfortably, realising that the run wouldn't really start until the Queen K. The temperature had come up to 37-38C by now and the last few hundred meters towards the Queen K up the deceivingly steep Palani road were agony. The 10km along the Queen K were run from aid station to aid station w a Smart1 gel every 20min and loads of water, ice and sponges at the aid stations. After 6 very hot km's through the Energy Lab the same tactic on the way back along the Queen K, which got me back up to Palani road and after a painful downhill run onto the most famous finishing straight in the world of triathlon!! Alii Drive!! What a finish, what a feeling, a very tough run got me to the finish line in 9.22.59. 118th overall. In an absolute world class field I can only be very pleased with this result. After 10 months of training it is now time to put my feet up and enjoy the island for a few more days. I'll be sore for days to come I'm sure, but is was worth every painful but exhilarating minute."
